PROTEUS-THE CHANGE OF CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH THE SHAPE SHIFTER GOD OF CHANGE
Referred as "Oracular Old Man Of The Sea " and The Herdsman Of Sea Beasts in Homeric Epic Odyssey (iv 412) Proteus is one of the earliest Greek sea god of change. According to mythological records , Proteus derives his name from the Greek word Proto denoting 'the First' , symbolising ' Proteus' as the 'Primordial' or the ' First born', as he was believed to be the Eldest son of Poseidon, older than his other son Triton. Proteus dwelt in the Sandy island of Pharos, hence in alternate versions he is sometimes referred as the Proteus of Egypt or the king of Eygpt the Immortal man dwelling at the sea bed, who never lies. . It is believed in the Hellenistic times, Proteus the Egyptian king had received Dionysus at the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Proteus was attributed with the psychic abilities of fore-telling future prophecies and possessed the magical power of shape-shifting or physical transfiguration into any other life form as desired.
INTERPRETATIONS IN PSYCHOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY AND THE SCIENCE OF ALCHEMY
German Mystic and Alchemist Heinrich Khunrath, regarded Proteus as the symbol of Anima Mundi or the World Soul as it indirectly explains the intrinsic relationship between all living forms and the inhabitant physical planet synonymous with the Soul's relationship with the inhabitant physical human body.
