THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF AGARTHA OR SHANGRI-LA DEPICTED THROUGH THE PAINTINGS OF NICHOLAS ROERICH
According to Tibetan esoteric Buddhism -Shangri-la or Shambhala is a secret hidden kingdom in Inner Asia. The mystical kingdom is believed to be complete living example of a Utopian Paradise physically present on earth, it also finds mention in several Sacred Esoteric texts like the Kalachakra Tantra and the Zhang-Zhung texts which heralded Tibetan Buddhism in West Tibet. In the pre- Buddhist Bon beliefs the Sacred land is referred as Olmolungring, which is regarded as a non-dual spiritual dimension or realm beyond material dualism, Tagzig Olmolungring is belived to encircle a central pyramidal mountain structure or the Yungdrung Gutseg serving as its axis mundi along 9 stairs symbolical of 9 Yungdrung signs or Swastika as the ascending ladder to higher conscious states along with the four sides representing the four cardinal directions emanating four rivers as the simulacra of elevated archetypal embodiments the Hidden paradise is the central prayer of the Bon Shamans or the bonpo, to be re-born in the land of non-dual existence.The four rivers of Narazara from the East embodying as the Snow lion or Snow leopard; the river Pakshi as the horse from the Northern direction; the river Gyim Shang as the Peacock flowing towards the west and lastly the river Sindhu as the Elephant flows to the South.
Revered as The Pure Land by the Buddhists, the kalchakra tantra was imparted by Shankyamuni Buddha to King Suchandra of Shambhala as it was belived to be the homeland of the governing Lord Maitreya and is also referred in the Hindu mythological epics of Mahabharata as the land of the emerging Kalki as the forerunner of the Coming Golden Age.
Nicholas Roerich a Russian spiritual archaeologist, painter, theosophist and traveller wrote his encounters and visions of Shambhala in his records and paintings.
